Frasier's
Dolphin Rescue

During a trip with Mote Marine
volunteers and scientists, in search of sea turtles, we came
across twelve frasier's dolphins (a very rare site) trying to
beach themselves. There is relatively little known about the
species, except that they're elusive and stay in open, deep water.
After many hours of trying to find a southeast research facility
that could take in so many dolphins, we had no success. So, we
took the opportunity to get DNA and blood samples, and tagged
them for tracking purposes. We tried to encourage them to swim
to deep water, but they wouldn't go, so we took them on our boats
to deep water in the Gulf of Mexico and released them. They've
not been seen again, which is a good sign. We theorized that
one may have been sick and the others followed him to shore.
I feel truly privileged to have been part of such as awesome
experience. . .
