Sometimes when I look at my easel I wonder 'just what will I work on today?' This is usually how my easel initially responds. . .

Through composition and design, what I hope to convey in this painting is the power and impact a marlin exhibits after crashing through the surface and re-entering the water. After several sketches and re-works, I have finally arrived at a composition that pleases me. With a charcoal vine I reproduced my sketch onto a primed panel. It will take a bit more 'working' until I get it just how I want it.

Here I've applied some paint, thin at first, just to block in color. At this stage, I'm going more for coverage vs. details but have started building up my lights & darks.

Here I'm working on details, conscious of the hardness/softness of edges, while still building up values. I've also worked on the 'vortex' of water, careful to leave the underpainting showing through at times, which gives great luminosity. I'm really getting liberal with the paint here, punching in darks, highlights and shadows. It's just about done. . .

The finished piece. . .The title is 'Indigo' to represent all the blue tones.
